Library Links Penn Elementary Summer Reading Program The purpose of the PWCS Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to enjoy quality literature and to continue developing their independent reading skills. Student participation in the program is voluntary. Students who choose to participate in the program are required to complete a minimum number of readings over the summer. For students who participate in Prince William County Public Library's Summer Reading Program, the Public Library documentation will apply. Students in Grade K-2 will receive an extra S+ for each book completed, for a total of five. Students in Grade 3-5 will receive an extra A for each book completed, for a total of three. Summer reading is due by the end of the first week of school. Go to the Penn Elementary website – http://pennes.schools.pwcs.edu/ - and look for the Summer Reading List link on the left-hand menu to view suggested titles for Summer Reading. These are only suggestions. Other books selected by the student with guidance from a parent/guardian and/or librarian may be used. Participation in the PWC Public Library Summer Reading Program and its documentation are also acceptable. Welcome to our new online Penn Library Catalog! To access the catalog please select Penn Elementary from the list of schools. Go directly to the catalog tab to begin searching - it is not necessary to login. You will be able to see our entire Penn Library collection and also search for AR books by level. Penn Elementary students voted for their favorite Virginia Readers' Choice books on April 13th. Our students selected "Duck, Rabbit" as their number one primary book and "Blown Away" as the best chapter book. The Virginia State Reading Association just announced this year's statewide winners. For the first time since Penn Elementary has been participating in this program we did not pick the winners, although one was our second choice. The winner of the Primary Book category was "CHESTER" by Melanie Watt, and the winner of the Elementary category is "ALVIN HO: ALLERGIC TO GIRLS, SCHOOL AND OTHER SCARY THINGS" by Lenore Look. It's never too soon to start reading next year's list of books competing in the Virginia Readers' Choice program. Click on the link and open the 2011-12 Primary and Elementary lists to see the new titles. Get a jump on reading and check some of them out during the summer! New Reading Corner DedicatedA cozy little library nook has been created in our library to honor our longtime friend and library volunteer extraordinaire, Gayle Swabb. Mrs. Swabb has unselfishly donated her time, talents, and gifts to our library ever since Penn opened way back in 1998! And she continues to do so even long after her grandchildren have left Penn. If you see Gayle sometime during Book Fair week, please take the time to say thank you for all she does for your students here at school.
